TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone)

The pituitary hormone used as the main blood test for thyroid function.

TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) is released by the pituitary gland to tell the thyroid how much hormone to make. It's the primary screening blood test for thyroid function: a high TSH usually signals an underactive thyroid — the body shouting for more hormone — as in Hashimoto's. It's the number most often tracked to fine-tune thyroid medication.
