Visceral hypersensitivity

When the gut's nerves are dialled up, so normal digestion feels painful.

Visceral hypersensitivity is a heightened sensitivity of the nerves in the gut, so ordinary events — gas, or the bowel stretching — register as pain or bloating that most people never notice. It's a core mechanism in IBS and part of why the gut can look normal on scans while still hurting.
